Ah, do you smell that? Do you feel it in the air? It’s the scent of a new year, the taste of a blank space and a fresh start; with endless possibilities. I particularly love the New Year because it gives me a chance to reflect on myself and the life I’ve lived for the past twelve months. I take this time seriously to revaluate things that I’ve done, or things I wish I had or hadn’t done. I like to learn from my past experiences and use that knowledge towards building a better future. With 2016 right around the corner, I’ve been doing a lot of relfecting and a lot of planning for the upcoming year, I have a feeling it’s going to be a big one!
Today I’ve decided to share some of my tips and ideas for being the best you that you can be this New Year. I’ve also included ths New Years resolution planning worksheet I designed for myself to get my 2016 goals organized. I hung mine up right above my desk so I can be reminded of my focus every single day. Feel free to download this worksheet and use it for your own New Years Resolution planning!
- Get in shape
I know this is usually at the top of most people’s New Years resolutions, but this year we all should take this one seriously. After all, your body is the only place you have to live. Start by making a small weekly gym commitment and work your way up. Another idea is to hire a personal trainer to keep you accountable; it’s definitely an investment into a better and healthier future.
- Get your finances in shape
Credit card debt? Student loans? Stop brushing them off! This year, make an appointment with a financial advisor and have a serious discussion about getting your finances back on track. Don’t let 2016 be another year plagued with overwhelming debt, take the bull by the horns and start taking steps towards eliminating it right away
- Book a trip
There is a quote that reads; “Once a year travel some place you have never been before.” I am a firm believer and follower of this mantra and I believe everyone else should be too! Whether it’s a weekend road trip or a journey across the world, this year make sure to take some time to explore a new land.
- Get organized
The best thing I did in 2015 was get my hands on an Erin Condren planner. This little book has been my saving grace! Any planner will do the trick, just find something that you can plan and organize your time with. It will take a lot of stress off of you and leave you thinking more clearly. You can purchase your own Erin Condren planner here.
One of my New Years resolutions last year was to read a book a month. I am happy to say that I surpassed that goal, and read 16 books this year. I think everyone should carve out a little extra time for reading this year. Whether you’re educating yourself in a non-fiction or losing yourself in a wonderful story, there is nothing quite like the power of words.
Speaking of the power of words; why not make some time to start writing this year? Maybe not a novel, but just keeping a journal or even starting a blog can be a great creative outlet to get your thoughts out in the open and let your mind wander.
- Learn something new
Whether it’s a new language, knitting, or cooking, this year expand your horizons and sign up for a class outside your comfort zone.
- Put your phone down
I am personally making it one of my goals this year to be on my phone a lot less. I know it’s difficult in our social media age, especially if you are a blogger or someone who works directly with social media. However, I believe it’s important to spend less time scrolling and more time being present this year.
- Get in touch with your faith
This doesn’t necessarily need to be religious, but spend some time in 2016 reconnecting with yourself on a spiritual level.
- Empower others
We live in such a harsh, cruel age of negativity and bullying; especially online. This year go out of your way to compliment a woman on the street, or encourage a young kid to pursue their dreams. I assure you it’ll make their day and you’ll feel amazing too.
- Give up one bad habit
Whether it’s something small like biting your nails, or a bigger habit like smoking, kicking one of these to the curb will drastically improve your life and your happiness in 2016.
- Let go of toxic people
You know who they are. Those “friends” who are only dragging you down. This year, let go or be dragged. Ditch those people who are holding you back and surround yourself with those who uplift you and support your best interests.
- Call your mom a little more
You know she loves you, you know you love her, but sometimes life gets in the way and she slips to the back of your mind. In 2016 make mama your priority and remind yourself to call her and remind her you love her a little more often than usual.
- Do one thing that scares you
Sky diving or public speaking, this year challenge yourself and face your fears. Prove that you’re stronger than you think you are.
Spend a little less time this year focussed on the negatives and focus on all your blessings, no matter no small. Find an excuse to smile more in 2016!
- Own it
Whatever you do in 2016, a new job, school, a talent, a trip, just fucking own it. Take on every challenge this year head on with the utmost confidence and make 2016 the best year yet.
