I can’t believe summer is over and I’m getting ready to go back to school already. 2017 has been a whirlwind of a year and I feel like time is just flying by!
August was an incredibly fun month for me where I got to do some traveling that wasn’t for work, which gave me a little bit of an opportunity to relax and soak up the sunshine a little more. I was able to travel to visit some friends of mine as well!
This last week of August has been especially crazy, with myself just coming off of a trip and trying to turn around to get everything ready to start school next week, all while helping out at my school’s student housing department to get some eager first-year students all moved in! With all the excitement looking ahead to September and a new school year, I’m grateful to have the chance to sit down and reflect on what an incredible month August was.
I truly couldn’t think of a better way to end the summer than this past month!
This month I had the chance to travel to West Palm Beach and Jupiter, Florida to see some of my friends and swim with sharks! This is the second time I’ve come back to Florida to hangout with these guys and shark dive and I absolutely love the diving down there! I’ve actually already booked my trip back in a few months to look for some Tiger sharks!
I ended off the summer with a cruise to the Bahamas with my family. We set sail on the Disney Dream from Port Canaveral, Florida and cruised to Nassau and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. I’ve never been a huge fan of cruise ships, but this trip was a fun way to get away with my family and I had the opportunity to learn a little bit about Disney’s sustainability efforts. Keep an eye out for a post about that next week!
Of course, the biggest highlight of this month was having the opportunity to get in the water with these amazing animals again. While I’ve always loved the ocean and being in the water, my love for sharks has really flourished in the last year and I’ve found myself so drawn to them and do determined to keep them safe from harm.
New Video Projects
This month I also embarked on a few new exciting video projects that I will be able to give more details about very soon! I’m really excited to have the opportunity to explore educating and sharing stories through this medium and can’t wait to share the final product with you guys!
The last highlight of this month was all the activities I’ve been able to be a part of on my campus. I am part of a handful of clubs and associations at my school already, but this month I took on a role in residence and have the opportunity to interact with first-year students and ease their transition to university. I personally had an awful first year at my old university, so I’m looking forward to the opportunity to help students avoid the disaster I lived and instead have a great first year at university.
Balance Between Work and Play
As I said before, this month all of my traveling was more for pleasure than play. None of these were press trips or trips where I had shoots or meetings. At first, I thought it might be a nice break, but I found myself still constantly wanting to work! It was difficult for me to turn my brain off, put the camera and social media away, and just lay out in the sunshine and enjoy the moment. This is certainly something I’m going to work on in the future because I don’t want to always only be living my travels through a camera lens!
This month has been pretty consistent, but easy going for my fitness routine. I’ve been in the gym 5-6 days a week and have started incorporating a lot of swimming training into my workouts, which I’m really loving. As this month comes to a close and school starts again, I’ll be in more of a set routine, albeit a busy one, but I’ll be looking to get back on a more regimented routine and add in more cardio to do a bit of a “mini-cut” before I head back to Florida.
Loving this month
Dallas Smith Side Effects
I have absolutely been loving this album and have had it on repeat all month! My favourite song is “Sky Stays This Blue” and I really hope Logan is so inclined to take me to see him live in concert when he comes to town in October. 😉
Blue Mind – Wallace J. Nichols
I’ve been working my way through this book this month and am finding it to be quite interesting. Originally I wasn’t aware of how much in-depth science was behind it, but the book cites lots of information from neuroscientists and doctors that have done research into why being in or around water makes us overall better people. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone who may be curious about where their deep rooted love for the ocean came from.
Erin Condren Planner
One of my favorite parts of going back to school is getting organized! I mean, I really do try to stay organized year round, but it can be really easy to let spontaneity take over when you’re a freelance and traveling so much. My favorite way to keep track of all of my dates, appointments, and tasks is in my Erin Condren planner. I really love how sturdy these are and that I can customize the covers to be anything I want! Having the day broken up into three sections also allows me to easily separate my work, school, and personal appointments.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I absolutely I love Hydro Flask. Their reusable water bottles are a little bit more expensive but so worth it. I have a 40oz water bottle that keeps my water ice cold even in the hottest of temperatures in Hawaii! However, my love this month is with my new Hydro Flask for coffee. I’ve been trying to ditch my habit of paper coffee cups and I think I finally have. This cup holds 21 oz. of coffee and keeps it hot for hours. I’ve been using it pretty much every single day this month!

Plans for September 2017
The month of September will be super busy as I get started in my third year of university and am coordinating some pretty big projects and events on my campus. I’ll also be visiting Ottawa this month and working on a huge series of posts exposing some of Canada’s largest aquariums.
