Today I am going to be taking you through the five W’s (and an H!) of one of California’s most stunning beach cities: MALIBU!
Stretching more than 50 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean, with some of the best waves in the entire world, Malibu is a truly extraordinary destination for surfers and casual beach goers alike. An endless array of beachfront villas, jaw-dropping sunsets, and shopping outlets attract people from all walks of life to Malibu.
The food and fashion scenes in Malibu are unlike anywhere else in the world – that’s right, Malibu is more than just Baywatch and Barbie. While Malibu holds a very free-spirited and barefoot approach to life, it’s the birthplace of many of America’s most influential style trends and has become a hotspot foodie destination.
If you’re not sold on this paradise yet, I am going to break Malibu into the “who, what, when, where, why, and how” to tell you exactly why Malibu needs to be on your bucket list!
Who to go with
When I think of Malibu I think of two different types of trips; a girl’s weekend or a romantic getaway, and the truth is, the city is made for both!
Malibu can be best experienced with your girls by renting a stunning, beachfront villa and having your own photoshoots at the Malibu pier. Afterward, a night on the town is in order. Be sure to check out Moonshadows or try some karaoke at Café Havana.
You can enjoy Malibu with your loved one by experiencing the city’s sights from a gondola or indulging in a wine safari through Malibu’s vineyards. And don’t forget about those romantic Malibu sunsets! Curl up with a blanket on the beach and enjoy each other’s company as you watch the sun go down.
What to Eat
Malibu’s most famous fine dining restaurant is Nobu Malibu. Serving up exquisite, traditional Japanese cuisine, including a full sushi bar, and unbeatable ocean views from every seat in the house. Nobu Malibu is on the pricier side, but definitely worth the splurge! Be sure to book a table early as this place is in high demand – reservations can be made as early as one month prior!
Malibu Farm is a perfect spot for those who’ve just finished enjoying the pier as it’s located right next to it! This place is a vegan paradise, offering up tons of fresh animal free dishes. Malibu Farm prides itself on their local, organic ingredients and offering guests a wide variety of options from vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free!
When to Go
While there’s never a bad time to visit the Golden State, Malibu comes to life in the summer months. From May to August Malibu is in its peak. The weather is perfect with highs of 80’s and overnight lows of 60’s. Festival season is in full swing over the summer from giant music festivals like the Malibu Guitar Festival, to delicious food fests like the Calabasas Malibu Food & Wine Festival.

How to Pack
Malibu is the place to let your true style shine, so pull out those wild prints and bright colours from the back of your closet, because they were made for Malibu. Like I’ve already said, the weather in Malibu is gorgeous year-round, so make sure to pack your warm weather clothes and swimsuits! Malibu is a beach town, meaning girls can get away with just throwing on a cover-up over their bikinis to enter into snack shops, so if you don’t already have one, here’s your excuse to invest in a cute cover-up. If you’re travelling in the winter months bring a light sweater for the cooler evenings and consider bringing your own wetsuit or renting one at the beach, as the water can be a little colder at this time.
And remember, this is California. Leave your tuxedos and fancy dress clothes at home, Malibu is all about the laid back style, even in its finest dining restaurants. In fact, in most places, if you show up in anything more than sandals you’ll be getting the side-eye from locals.
Surfrider Beach is where the mountains meet the sea and surfers from all across the globe come to ride the waves. There are designated swimming and surfing areas, so you can enjoy the views and sunshine, even if you’re not a surfer. Surfrider Beach also houses a sandy volleyball court for those looking to get a little active, and there are lifeguards on duty during peak hours.
Just east of the beach is the historic Malibu Pier; a must-see spot when visiting Malibu! Perfect not only for pictures, this pier is a hotspot for picnics, bird watching, and fishing.
For those looking for a more historic and cultural Malibu experience, Getty Villa is the place to be. This museum houses some of the finest art and architectural work from the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome. Even non-history buffs will fall in love with the beauty of the building in itself.
