Meet Emily

I teach people how to see the world and save it at the same time.

Airplanes & Avocados is a resource that provides readers with insights on how to travel with minimal environmental impact, while giving back to local communities, and experiencing a more authentic and fulfilling travel experience themselves.

Hey, I'm Emily. A Canadian beach bum on a mission to see the world and save it at the same time.

I am a sustainable travel and seafood blogger. I help students and young professionals travel more meaningfully and eat seafood more sustainably by producing online educational content because travel, sustainability, and great seafood should be accessible to everyone.

I started Airplanes & Avocados in 2015 as a way to document my travels and keep my “wanderlust” alive even when I wasn't traveling. As a (still!) full-time student, academic responsibilities often keep me from adventuring as much as I wanted to. This blog helps to satisfy my restless soul when I have to hit the books instead of a beach.

I've always done things my own way and just a little bit differently than everyone else. (Just ask any of my high school teachers). Occasionally, marching to the beat of my own drum has landed me in hot water, but more often than not it's led to unforgettable adventures – this blog being the biggest one yet!

When I started Airplanes & Avocados in 2015 I was doing so to escape the “real world”. I had just started university at a school I thought I loved but ended up disliking, and taking a program that was not meant for me. At first, I used this blog as a way to document my previous summer of travel through personal essays and photographs – my way of keeping the life that I so badly craved in sight.

In early 2016, my blog took a major turn.

At this time I had abandoned my previous university program and was desperately trying to find something that I was passionate about to study because as I was told several times, you can't make a career out of travel blogging. This is how I found myself in the dingy basement of my campus' library at 7 pm on a Wednesday in the back row of a class called “Introduction to Environmental Studies”. It sounds horribly cliche, but this class changed my life. I had discovered a massive, global problem that suddenly, all I wanted to do was dedicate myself to solving. Rather than be scared off by the figures and facts of climate change, I ran at them head-on, immersing myself in every single book and journal article I could get my hands on to learn more about this crisis the world was facing and what I could do to solve it.

This is how Airplanes & Avocados become a sustainable travel brand. I wasn't ready to give up my passion for travel and I didn't believe that I had to. I was convinced that there was a way to see the world and save it at the same time. This belief led to the creation of the three pillars that make up the foundation of Airplanes & Avocados today:

Since embarking on this journey, I've remained a full-time student and a full-time traveler, which has allowed me to satisfy my craving for learning and adventure at the same time. This blog still serves as a bit of a personal diary for me to document and share my travels on, but more importantly, it has become a resource for those who want to explore in a meaningful way that doesn't cause harm to our planet.

The goal of Airplanes & Avocados is to inspire people to chase after their travel dreams in a way that supports local communities, supports the planet, and supports responsible travel.

It's possible to see the world and
save it at the same time.
